NIT Rourkela was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela on 15 August 1961. Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik provided the land for it, approximately 648 acres. Its foundation stone was laid by the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
National Institute of Technology, Rourkela is famous for its vast infrastructure and the facilities it offers to students. NIT Rourkela also arranges worshops and seminars for students and teachers.

NIT Rourkela’s 2023 placement season saw a record-high average salary of INR 12.95 lakhs per annum (LPA), with the highest package being INR 52.89 LPA. A total of 1,534 offers were made by 330 companies, and 24 students received offers of over INR 50 LPA. The average salary for BTech students was INR 14.22 LPA.

The top sector for placements was software and IT services, with 31.1% of the offers. The most popular recruiters were SAP Labs, Shell, Deloitte, PwC, and Kantar. Facilities & Hostel
Every hall of residence boasts of a Badminton court and a Volleyball court for its boarders. It also provides facilities for Table Tennis, Carom and Chess. Some of the hostels are also equipped with a modern gym with the latest equipments.
